Canone & Canone Backups
Privacy policy
Last updated: 14 October 2026
Canone is a worldbuilding and writing app developed by Hibiscusflair. This policy describes the current Windows desktop beta, its optional Google Drive connection named Canone Backups, and this website.
1. Local project data
Your desktop project folder stores your writing, worldbuilding records, and embedded assets on your computer. Local saves, snapshots, and exports do not automatically send project contents to the developer. Google Drive uploads happen only after you connect an account and enable backups for that project.
Other actions you choose, such as opening external links, using embedded third-party media, or sharing exports, may involve the service you select. Linked files outside a project folder are not included in project backups.
2. Optional Google Drive backups
Permission and purpose
Canone Backups uses Google’s drive.file permission to create and manage its backup folder and project ZIP files in your Google Drive, and to check metadata for those files. This permission also covers specific files you explicitly authorize for the app. It does not grant general access to every file in your Drive.
The app uses this access to provide the backup feature you enable: creating a Canone Backups folder, uploading snapshots, confirming uploads, and opening your backup folder in the browser. It does not request Gmail, Google Contacts, or Google Photos access.
What is accessed and uploaded
A backup ZIP contains your project database, snapshot manifest, and embedded assets, including images, audio, and video. The complete database may include private notes and unpublished writing. Treat each backup as a complete copy of that project.
The app processes the backup folder ID, backup file IDs and names, file sizes, file hashes, upload results, and related file metadata to manage and verify delivery. It sends backup ZIPs directly from your computer to Google over HTTPS; the developer’s licensing server does not receive those ZIPs or your Google authorization tokens.
Authorization and local storage
You sign in through Google in your browser. Canone does not receive your Google password. Google issues access and refresh tokens so the app can perform authorized backups and renew access while it is running.
The refresh token and client configuration are stored in Canone’s local app data, protected with Windows DPAPI for your Windows account. Access tokens are used by the native app for Google API requests. Local settings also store project backup preferences, the latest successful upload time, and backup errors.
Retention and deletion
Pending ZIPs are kept in a local upload queue outside your project folder. They survive restarting Canone and deleting local snapshots or the original project. A queued ZIP and its queue entry are removed after confirmed cloud upload. Pausing a project or disconnecting keeps pending ZIPs on disk.
Uploaded ZIPs remain in your Drive until you delete them there. There is no automatic cloud retention limit in the current version. Deleting local snapshots, deleting a project, or disconnecting does not delete uploaded files. Google manages the storage and retention of files and trash in your account.
Use and sharing
Canone uses Google data only to provide the backup feature described here. It does not sell Google user data, use it for advertising, or use it to train AI models. The developer does not receive or review your cloud backup contents through this integration. Google processes the uploaded files under its own privacy policy.
Canone’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Security and limitations
Backup ZIPs are ordinary project files. Canone does not add separate client-side encryption to the local queue or uploaded ZIPs. Anyone you give access to those files may be able to read their contents. Your Windows account, device security, and Google account security help protect them.
A cloud backup is confirmed only when Canone shows a successful upload. Uploads require internet access, available Google Drive storage, and valid authorization. They run while Canone is open; autosave alone does not create a cloud snapshot.
3. Beta licensing
The licensed Windows beta contacts Canone’s licensing service to activate and verify access. These requests contain your license key, a device fingerprint, and the computer name. The licensing service uses Keygen to validate licenses and manage activated devices. Hosting and licensing providers also process connection information needed to run and secure their services, such as IP addresses and request times.
This information is used to manage beta access, enforce device limits, and respond to activation problems. Project contents and Google Drive tokens are not included in licensing requests. License records may be retained while needed to administer beta access; contact the developer about your records or a deletion request.
4. This website and support
This website has no analytics scripts, advertising, tracking pixels, account forms, or cookies set by its page code. Fonts and artwork are served as local site assets. The hosting provider may process technical connection information, such as IP address, browser information, and request time, to deliver and secure the site.
If you email the developer, your email address, message, and any attachments you choose to send are processed to respond to your enquiry. Share only the information needed for support. Support messages may be retained for follow-up; you can ask for their deletion by email.
5. Your choices and control
- Use Canone without connecting Google Drive.
- Enable or pause Drive uploads separately for each project.
- Use Disconnect all projects to remove the saved Google refresh token from this PC and disable uploads.
- Revoke Canone’s authorization through your Google Account’s third-party connections.
- Download or delete cloud ZIPs directly in Google Drive. Disconnecting does not remove them.
- Delete local projects and exports through your computer’s file manager. Pending archives are separate, in Canone’s local app data under
google-drive/outbox. Contact the developer for help locating and removing them after disconnecting. - Contact the developer about licensing and support information associated with you.
6. Changes to this policy
This page will be updated if Canone’s data handling changes. The date above identifies the latest update. Changes that require additional Google data access will require appropriate notice and consent before that access is used.
